As the years go by, the United States seems finally to be able to acknowledge what everyone else in the world has known for years -- 9/11 happened because Bush and Cheney were too stupid to prevent it.
Contrary to all the "nobody could have predicted" excuses, the CIA knew that Bin Laden was dangerous. They warned Bush and Cheney again and again, month after month. But Bush and Cheney didn't listen because Rumsfeld and his neocon brain trust in the Pentagon (Wolfowitz, Cambone, Feith) were too busy creating fairy tales about Saddam Hussein:
The direct warnings to Mr. Bush about the possibility of a Qaeda attack began in the spring of 2001. By May 1, the Central Intelligence Agency told the White House of a report that “a group presently in the United States” was planning a terrorist operation. Weeks later, on June 22, the daily brief reported that Qaeda strikes could be “imminent,” although intelligence suggested the time frame was flexible. This is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper.
But some in the administration considered the warning to be just bluster. An intelligence official and a member of the Bush administration both told me in interviews that the neoconservative leaders who had recently assumed power at the Pentagon were warning the White House that the C.I.A. had been fooled; according to this theory, Bin Laden was merely pretending to be planning an attack to distract the administration from Saddam Hussein, whom the neoconservatives saw as a greater threat. Intelligence officials, these sources said, protested that the idea of Bin Laden, an Islamic fundamentalist, conspiring with Mr. Hussein, an Iraqi secularist, was ridiculous, but the neoconservatives’ suspicions were nevertheless carrying the day.
In response, the C.I.A. prepared an analysis that all but pleaded with the White House to accept that the danger from Bin Laden was real.

People are free to feel and think what they want, there are some that think that Hitler was correct, Jews are the problem. There are many that think JFK was killed by the CIA, that men never landed on the moon and, that 9-11 was an inside job and not by radical Islamic lunatics, and, now, on the 9-11 anniversary there are the wingnuts who with the help of hindsite will argue for strictly political gains that President Bush could have stopped the attack but choose not to, for whatever reason. 3000 murdered and this is the best you can come up with. There are a hundred arguements against this insanity but why bother right? You cant argue with Holocaust deniers, JFK conspirasicts or the lunatic fringe who believe man has never landed on the moon...you just cant because they want to believe it so bad. Pathetic really.

This could be true. Bush could have been so stupid, and eveyone who saw the brief could have just dismissedd it. But what about Able Danger?
Bush didn't "choose not to" stop the attack -- he and Cheney were just so incompetent in terms of management skills that they couldn't understand the seriousness of what the CIA was telling them, and they didn't know how to set up a committee which would have put the pieces together.
Obama was able to get Bin Laden because he set up focused, competent committees and analysts who put the pieces together. Bush and Cheney didn't know how to set up this kind of productive working group.
ou only have to know two things.
One is that according to the official story, a handful of Arabs, mainly Saudi Arabians, operating independently of any government and competent intelligence service, men without James Bond and V for Vendetta capabilities, outwitted not only the CIA, FBI, and National Security Agency, but all 16 US intelligence agencies, along with all security agencies of America’s NATO allies and Israel’s Mossad. Not only did the entire intelligence forces of the Western world fail, but on the morning of the attack the entire apparatus of the National Security State simultaneously failed. Airport security failed four times in one hour. NORAD failed. Air Traffic Control failed. The US Air Force failed. The National Security Council failed. Dick Cheney failed. Absolutely nothing worked. The world’s only superpower was helpless at the humiliating mercy of a few undistinguished Arabs.
It is hard to image a more far-fetched story–except for the second thing you need to know: The humiliating failure of US National Security did not result in immediate demands from the President of the United States, from Congress, from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and from the media for an investigation of how such improbable total failure could have occurred. No one was held accountable for the greatest failure of national security in world history.
