PROUD DAD For 16 years Lasse Ericsson has been Canada’s Para Alpine coach. Today his 21-year-old son Kalle, in his first Paralympic race, won silver with his guide Sierra Smith. Lasse told me his heart was racing. Bursting with pride. Spectacular stuff.

Fun with Threads
Threads is often a fun social media platform because of the rabbit holes people dig there and the hundreds who then follow them down - recently there were stories about the family cruise from hell, and about the husband who volunteered his wife to host a birthday party, don't worry dear I'll do all the work, and how did THAT work out? hmmm. And thus, the term "sherlocking" entered the Threads lexicon.
So here's what happening over there this week:

Moar Epstein Files

Wait. They are releasing Epstein files to distract Americans from the war in Iran now?

Its a fascinating article:
...Instead of Googling Epstein, Aaronson, then 29, turned to what he considered an even more reliable source: his mother. She did some checking. “Be careful not to get sucked up in the slime-machine going on here,” she wrote back, adding, “Since you don’t care that much about money, they can’t buy you.”
Her wise counsel, Aaronson says, saved him from doing something he later would have greatly regretted. “If not for my mom, I might have gone and talked at a workshop to kick off the project,” he says. “I don’t think doing that would have made me complicit. But, you know, it would have been very embarrassing for me.”...

On a more serious note, here is Heather Cox Richardson in her March 7 Letter from an American post, where she discusses a Senate speech on Thursday by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who draws links between Trump, Epstein and Russia:
...“If Trump were purposefully doing Russia’s bidding,” Whitehouse said, “it is hard to see what he would be doing differently. The United States is the most powerful nation in the world. Russia is a weak, corrupt regime. My old friend Senator John McCain used to say that Russia is a gas station, run by gangsters, with an army. It doesn’t make sense that the President of the United States, who insists—insists—on being dominant in essentially every relationship, is so submissive to one person and that one person is Russia’s dictator, Vladimir Putin.”
Whitehouse suggested that the answer “could…have something to do with Trump’s close friendship with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.” He noted that the Epstein files, riddled as they are with references to Trump, are also riddled with references to Russian girls and women, Russian operatives, and Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Whitehouse spoke about how many of Epstein’s victims believed he was recording them, and how there were hidden cameras installed throughout his homes. He quoted Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre, who wrote: “He explicitly talked about using me and what I’d been forced to do with certain men as a form of blackmail, so these men would owe him favors.”
Whitehouse suggested the possibility that Epstein might have been working with Russian operatives, but emphasized that we don’t know. “Epstein was an inveterate liar and a criminal who often sought to exaggerate his power and influence, and the Epstein files need to be viewed through that lens,” he said. “What we do know is that a significant number of powerful men—our current President, some of his cabinet secretaries, tech billionaires like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and others—were very mixed up with Epstein at different times. And Epstein seems to have been very mixed up with Russia.”
“We also know that there is a cover-up afoot at the Department of Justice,” he continued, where officials are “trying to shield Trump from something in the Epstein files.”
“One of the great forces that Washington runs on is normalcy bias,” he said, but he suggested looking past that bias to note that “we have links with Russia, girls from Russia, money from Russia, people from Russia, deals and transactions with Russia, contacts with people with Russian intelligence, news reports exploring contacts with Russia, and an official investigation from the government of Poland into an Epstein-Russia connection.”...
Wow! If Richardson finds Whitehouse's speculation credible, then so do I.

Animal Crackers
Here's some good news, mostly about animals

Have we talked about the baboons? In Kenya in the 1970s/80s, there was a group of baboons that were under observation by primatologist Robert Sapolsky. Apparently, baboons are assholes. There is a hierarchy, usually based on aggression, and the alpha male baboons regularly bully the lower-status troop members. They don't help around the forest. They leave all the child care to the females. They don't engage with one another beyond their baboon posturing. Baboons also experience high levels of stress--not surprising if Pete the Aggressive Primate King is constantly acting like a dick and never helping out. One day, the chest-thumper baboon bros found a stash of human food that had been left behind. Being the un-community minded primates they were, they ate it all. Didn't share a single bit. Well, dear reader, the food was tainted with bovine tuberculosis. Short story, they all died. Whomp whomp. Sapolsky figured that without the aggressive male leaders, the troop would fall apart, so he packed up his bags and headed home. Nothing to see here. Except... It turns out that when the alpha baboons poisoned themselves to death, the rest of the troop, the females, offspring, and less aggressive males, took it upon themselves to make some changes. When Sapolsky returned 10 years later, he found the Forest Troop living like that Coca-Cola commercial of days gone by, in perfect harmony. Male baboons, who never did any grooming or took part in any tiny baboon care, were grooming each other and taking care of the wee ones. Everyone was chill. Everyone was less stressed. The Forest Troop was not only living, they were living their best baboon lives. And it gets better--they noticed that when other aggressive males tried to enter the troop and assert any kind of dominance, the Forest Troop smacked them down right from the start. None of that chest-thumping bully crap here, fellas. Sharpen your nails and go comb some kiddie baboon mane. Make a coconut water date. Play a bit. The moral of the story is obvious. Anyway, in these days of alpha this and beta that, of super aggressive behavior, it seemed like a good story to tell. We can have nice things. Probably even without the poisoned food. ** I heard about the Forest Troop not that long ago and filed it away for a day when I was feeling salty.
