CNN and the New York Times seem to think the Russian invasion of the Crimea is just another dispute between Obama and Putin, and they want Obama to swagger around showing everyone how much tougher he is. NYT says
The Russian occupation of Crimea has challenged Mr. Obama as has no other international crisis, and at its heart, the advice seemed to pose the same question: Is Mr. Obama tough enough to take on the former K.G.B. colonel in the Kremlin? If you want actual news about what is going on, check the BBC

Western leadership is showing a lack of balance right now. This isn't a matter of driving a gang of farmers out of Kabul or bombing columns of Libyan tanks.
This time it's Putin who is quite busy restoring Russia's military might, especially its strategic nuclear forces. John Baird's admonitions don't cut much ice with a cutthroat like Putin.
We know we can't cut Russia off. It's still winter and much of Europe depends on Russian natural gas. The Euros can spit and howl and stamp their feet but they'll be doing those things anyway to stay warm.
What I'm waiting for is China's reaction, if any. China doesn't put up with this sort of thing either and has shown, with its occupation of Tibet, we can be faced down.
I hope we don't overplay our hand.
Very perceptive, I had never thought of what China would be doing. If Ukraine is successful for Putin, maybe China thinks they will be next.
I don't figure China ought to consider itself in much danger... it's one thing for Russia to occupy a relatively small territory where the majority of the citizens are ethnically and linguistically Russian it's quite another to challenge a large nation with such a different ethnic and cultural make-up.
