Today's News: In our polite Canadian way, we're actually Mad as Hell!

In our Canadian way, we're all actually mad as hell at Trump and MAGA and the whole benighted American enterprise tonight.

I am finding lots of posts and suggestions about Buying Canadian now.
Also I am seeing reports of grocery stores with piles of American items that aren't selling, even when discounted. Good!

🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 Canada is not playing, they are getting ready to deal with Trump. Canada, you have my support!

Here's some worth noting:

By the way, Heinz is actually back in Canada now, using Canadian tomatoes in a Quebec plant:

And here's some good news: Because the Liberal government passed the Online News Act - which was said to be so awful and a mistake and useless etc etc -- and then negotiated with Google to compensate Canadian media for making money off our stories, the CBC is hiring 30 journalists to work in underserved communities across the country:
In an expansion of local and regional news to better serve more Canadians, CBC News today announced that it will hire up to 30 new permanent journalists in 22 communities across the country, including six locations in B.C., one location in the North, nine across the Prairies in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, three in Ontario, and one location each in Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. With the additional roles, CBC News will increase its footprint from 48 to 66 local stations and bureaus across the country, delivering trusted news to even more Canadians. As previously announced, this investment follows the CRTC’s approval of Google’s plan to compensate Canadian news organizations for the use of their news content.
Here's some more positive energy tonight:

On a side note, speaking of moose, there was an hilarious thread on Bluesky the other night, hashtag #MooseProof -- check it out:

If I’ve learned anything about Americans, in particular, lately is that a strong survival instinct isn’t nearly as common as I once assumed. Petting a moose???? My word. #MooseProof

This shit is getting real, isn't it:

Trump doubles down saying that’s it’s tariffs or statehood for Canada. Now is not the time for cowardice. Canada needs to stand as one and tell him “no way”. #abpoli #ableg #cdnpoli

You made me check the fridge and pantry. I was pleasantly surprised. Here in Nova Scotia, I buy local pork , chicken ,fish, potatoes, apples , bread and dairy. Our communications are all Canadian and the 2 cars ( 1 BEV ) are Korean. We haven't crossed the border since Sept. 2001.

Boycotting US stuff is not hard , not expensive and not painfull.

Most of the Canadian companies,Princess Auto, Canadian Tire etc... sell all Chinese made products. In fact I think you would be hard pressed to find anything made in Canad

The noname canned goods and peanut butter in our kitchen are not labeled with country of origin. Google tells me that goods made outside Canada must be identified for Canada Customs. I assume the yellow and blue gereric stuff I buy is made in Canada.

The profits that Canadian Tire make on Chinese products stays in Canada.
The profits from Home Depot Starbucks etc go south to the USA.
Boycotting US companies could do Canada a lot of good.
Shop local, shop Canadian.

I think the first thing is to try to buy Canadian-made products. Secondarily, “Canadian companies”. Companies can be US-based and still sell Canadian products. Keep in mind that you likely own a piece of those US-based companies in your pension - including in the CPP. Just a thought.

The end result has to be less reliance on the USA.
They are proving to be an unreliable partner, trade or no trade!

So let's be clear--the United States is doing a trade war with us and threatening us and seems to want to try to annex us. So why exactly are we in a military alliance with these people? They're certainly not acting like an "ally". Isn't it time we left NATO?

Cathie from Canada said...

I see NATO as an alliance intended to prevent war in Europe (even though the only time it was ever activated was by the US, after 911, to go to war in Afghanistan.) But basically, we are going to have to feel our way for the next four years, and hope Trump gets so mired in his own problems in the US that he gets distracted and forgets about us.

We all need to start looking at this like the great opportunity it is.
- export taxes to generate revenue for Canadian businesses
- better labeling requirements that would show country of origin for any imported ingredients
- banning garbage dumps like X and others
- ridding everything from school books to pharmaceuticals of American ownership
- 'jailbreaking' tech that would let Canadian companies trade without Apple/Android fees
- eliminating inter-provincial trade barriers
-diversifying our list of valued trade partners

And on and on. Trump and his cabal have no idea what we can do when we want to. And we're going to start now.
