and cue the Poilievre hissy fit tempest in a teapot. Here's the story that Canadian Press reported:
...While taking questions from reporters in Johannesburg on Sunday, Carney was asked when he last spoke with Trump and replied, “Who cares?”Yeah, because Poilievre always was a Friend to the Working Man! Here's the video of what Carney said:
“I look forward to speaking with the president soon, but I don’t have a burning issue to speak with the president about right now,” he said. “When America wants to come back and have conversations on the trade side, we will have those discussions
The prime minister made the remarks to reporters while he was attending the G20 leaders’ summit, which Trump boycotted.
Conservatives zeroed in on Carney’s comments during question period in the House of Commons on Monday. Leader Pierre Poilievre pointed out that Carney campaigned during the spring election on his ability to deal with the Trump administration.
“We care about the workers who have lost their jobs and don’t have paycheques to make their mortgage payments. Why doesn’t he care?” Poilievre said....

Carney knows this too:Carney's past employment makes me wonder how much he and his former colleagues in the global banking system know about DJT's financial shenanigans... it may explain the barely concealed contempt we see evinced here ...

Why a new pipeline?
Is it just to shut Alberta up? Charlie Angus is not impressed:
Maybe its actually mythical!Danielle Smith just suckered Mark Carney into reviving the Northern Gateway pipeline. This is the antithesis of "nation-building." There is no economic, political or environmental case for Stephen Harper's dream. This won't end well. For Canada or Carney. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

“With memories of cost overruns, stranded barrels, and billions in lost revenue still fresh, few in the industry are eager to sponsor the next big push if the movie risks ending the same way,” Tertzakian noted in the report. Of course it will! ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/why-pri... #cdnpoli

Why a War with Venezuela?I agree with Eby: no way do I want my tax dollars to pay for a pipeline. If it's such a great idea, let big oil pay for it. If Alberta want to pipe more bitumen to the coast, increase the capacity of Trans Mountain first, preferably not on the taxpayers' dime. www.ctvnews.ca/politics/art...

Two memorials commemorating black soldiers serving in WW2 were recently quietly removed from the American-managed warcemetery "Margraten" in the Netherlands.
When locals noticed this and demanded an explanation, at first the American ambassador claimed that this was a simple matter of rotating exhibitions and that they would return after touring the world, but he quickly changed that to "they are being repaired" and eventually to "they are politically motivated and should not be there". This met with anger from the locals and descendants - especially since the graves at Margraten were literally dug by said black soldiers.
The American organization in charge of managing Margraten subsequently confirmed that specific memorials for black people "were not part of its mission". This echoes the sentiment of the Trump government to "erase" the historical achievements and contributions of women and people of color from US history.
The tvshow "Even tot hier" decided to place two new memorials just outside Margraten in response. Those are not allowed to remain there permanently though - so the show and descendants are now looking for a permanent location.

I really can't figure out what's likely to happen in Venezuela. I can see them bombing the place some, and maybe landing some special forces to try for a decapitation, which they might think would allow them to replace the government with some dictator of their choosing. This would not work. They only think it would work because they believe their own propaganda. The fact is that Nicolas Maduro is not a dictator. He is an elected president who is part of an administration with a parliamentary majority and a whole lot of laws about what happens if the president dies. You go to the vice president, then the speaker of the house or something, so forth and so on. Whatever the Americans might be able to do, the government would continue to exist and would be led by the PSUV, Venezuela's United Socialist party. And the military is pretty loyal to the government, this has been shown over and over.
But if they try a land invasion it will be far worse. First, I don't think their naval task force has enough people for a full scale invasion. I'm sure they could take Caracas, but an administration could be set up somewhere else to run a war effort. But OK, they take a beachhead and then they start bringing in troops until it's a full scale Iraq-style invasion. Then they've got an Afghanistan situation only worse. Venezuela is bigger, far more nationalist, has more of a military, and has armed literally millions of people in the militia.
And then of course there's the reactions of Venezuela's neighbours and the rest of Latin America, let alone the world. When the US was in Afghanistan, everyone helped; even Russia co-operated. I don't know just what Colombia and Brazil will do in this situation . . . they won't declare war, but they won't be friendly about it, and neither will anyone else in the region except Argentina and Ecuador. There will certainly be plenty of guns run through the very porous border with Colombia. It'll be a nightmare . . . even more of a nightmare for the Venezuelans, but the US is not going to enjoy the results of such a move.
It will be a debacle. I wonder if Trump and Hegseth have ever heard of the Bay of Pigs?
