Gordie Howe Bridge update
CTV reports:
Prime Minister Mark Carney is defending the deal brokered between Canada and the United States to open the delayed Gordie Howe International Bridge and insists the profits split with the Americans will be minimal.I suspect the idea behind the bridge toll "regional average" agreement is to protect the Maroun family so the new bridge won't be allowed to charge less than they are already charging for their Ambassador Bridge.
“The word ‘net’ does a lot of work in this. We are sharing after Canada is paid back,” Carney said in an interview with CTV Calgary’s Tara Nelson at the Calgary Stampede on Sunday when asked about the agreement.
“We get the revenues. Then the servicing of the costs of the bridge and paying the debt of the bridge, and then what’s left over, there’s a split of that for 15 years,” he said.
“There’s not going to be a lot of net to split,” the prime minister later added.
According to a senior government source, Canada will get 50 per cent of the bridge’s toll profits in the first 15 years, with the other 50 per cent going into an economic development fund.
The source also tells CTV News that the U.S. will need to agree if Canada wants to increase bridge tolls by more than 10 per cent or lower them below compared regional averages....

Trump’s administration was overall in charge of the 2020 election. So, if there were any consequential issues with the election that could have possibly caused the election to be “stolen”, it was due to his incompetence.

Sigh. All this hopium about Russia/Ukraine is nonsense. I mean, sure, I'm sure Ukraine did send a drone boat to drop off a drone with a machine gun at a position that doesn't matter. But the narrative surrounding that is just dead wrong.
So first of all, Russia does NOT have an arithmetic of spending lives faster than Ukraine can. To the contrary, casualties have and continue to be lopsided against Ukraine--Russia is losing far fewer people. One part of Russia's arithmetic does involve Ukraine eventually running out, yes, but that's pretty on schedule. And it's true that the drones help, allowing a piece of front to be held with fewer people--but you still need people to run the drones, you still need people to bring stuff to the front, and to some extent you still need people to fight. Meanwhile Russia actually has MORE drones than Ukraine does.
Second, a big part of this (and any) fight is logistics. A drone boat and a drone with a machine gun are materiel in themselves that have to be transported, and they also need to use fuel which has to be transported. Ukraine has been doing a pretty good job of ruining logistics in Crimea, which is a significant problem for Russia. But Russia has been doing an even better job of ruining logistics all over Ukraine. There are big swaths where there are no gas stations left and they're trying to use tanker trucks as gas stations but those are targets too. The effectiveness of Ukrainian longer range drones directed at Russia proper recently degraded greatly because they were forced to pull the trucks that launch the drones back a long way from the border, because no gas stations and the Russians were hitting just every truck that parked throughout the north of Ukraine. They are now doing the same stuff down south in the Odessa region, which is going to reduce the effectiveness of Ukrainian attacks on Crimea and also make it very very difficult to mount the counterattack towards Crimea that Ukraine have apparently been planning.
The war isn't a walkover. There are plenty of things happening that Russia is not happy that they happened, like those tankers. Both sides get damaged in a war. But Russia keeps slowly moving forward, Russia keeps destroying Ukrainian logistics, production and some kinds of infrastructure, and Russia keeps killing Ukrainian troops at a much faster rate than Russia loses troops. Indeed, the slow forward progress seems to reflect an unwillingness to spend Russian lives; they are fighting conservatively, because they can. Russia is winning the war, Ukraine is losing the war (NATO is losing the war), and barring some really blue-sky change in the circumstances, Russia will eventually win the war. When? Really hard to tell. It will go slow, and then (when some breaking point is reached) it will go fast, but when the transition happens is anyone's guess.
There are plenty of cheerleaders claiming the opposite. They are the same people who said Russia was going to run out of ammunition by, um, a couple of years ago.

NATO is not in on this war. Russia under Putin, your hero has always been the aggressor. Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons for sovereignty and Putin interfered by running a Manchurian Candidate for president, when he was found out there was a revolution and the poor boy ran off to Mother Russia. Ukraine has the right to choose who they align with, if they really want to be a Russian colony they would have welcomed Russian troops as liberators, funny how you never notice that when you rant about NATO and the CIA. Ukrainians would rather die than be subservient to Russia, they remember Holodomar. Have you ever been to Russia or any of the Baltic states? I've not been to Ukraine but I've been to St Petersburg Russia, Poland, Chechnya, Hungary, Estonia, Finland and they all despise Russia the same way the UK and France are despised in Africa and the Middle East. Remember that the next time you spout your propaganda from your "special sources" you cite from your internet researches.

I am a leftist who supports the NDP. Going into the last federal election, I predicted the NDP were going to get wiped out. It was not because I WANTED the NDP to get wiped out. I wanted the NDP to win. I predicted they would get wiped out because the facts on the ground made it clear that was WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. Those of us in the reality-based community do that stuff.
If a person's political side insists that you must not pay attention to reality but instead report only what that political side wants to be true, it actually makes me really skeptical of that political side.

So PLG, you're not happy with me bringing up your constant blaming of NATO for the Russian/Ukraine war. Russia attacked Ukraine. Fact. Ukraine surrendered nuclear weapons for sovereignty. Fact. This war would end if Russia withdrew its troops. Fact. Putin tried to run a puppet for leader in Ukraine and got caught. See Belarus. Did the rebellion in Ukraine have CIA help? We don't really know but according to you they did of which you don't have factual evidence, just suspicion. But if the rebel leaders did ask the CIA for their help in removing Putin's puppet, would they not have that right? I pointed out to you Ukrainians overall agree with removing Putin's puppet otherwise the populace in general wouldn't be resisting the Russian invasion, they would have welcomed the Russian Army as liberators. By stating to you I visited many of these East European and Baltic countries, I've found the populace there don't want to be under the influence of Russia, they prefer closer ties to Western Europe. That is the mindset of citizens of those countries . The war in Ukraine was supposed be over in 2 weeks, instead it has been 4 1/2 years and has turned into a war of attrition, just like Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan wars were. The Ukrainian people won't surrender. Only you claim Russia is winning and it's only a matter of time before they win. I'm pointing out to you your "facts" are coloured by your perception of how this war started which is why I asked if you were on the ground to verify these "facts" that Russia is winning. You claim to know but you don't really. Russia's invasion, like the US bombing in Iran is a heavy drain on their economy while Ukraine's fight, like Iran is for survival. History shows invading countries bogged down in wars like this eventually withdraw. Fact.
Notice Putin is strangely absent these days? Not long ago after insulting Tucker Carlson, Putin stated, "Poland's next." Now with Ukraine drones striking targets around Moscow, Putin's bunkered up. Doesn't look or sound like a winning strategy to me. You and the rest of the Neville Chamberlains out there can put it in your pipe and smoke it.
Oh and BTW someone equating voting NDP and the NDP losing badly in the election to your version of what's happening in Ukraine shouldn't be calling others' statements stupid. Finally, go eff yourself.
Finally PLG, regarding the NDP doing so badly the last election, do you know who else knew they were going to lose so many seats? Everyone including this NDP voter. Polls and news coverage and the NDP's failed strategy as well as not wanting the Conservatives anywhere near the reigns of power made it obvious they were going to lose badly. So your insights don't translate in you having insights on the war in Ukraine. I read CBC, BBC, Reuters, AP and do follow securities contractor Adam Silverman who posts on BlueSky and Balloon Juice, a blog Cathy reads and comments on. Cite your sources that give evidence that NATO and the CIA are waging a war of aggression agains Russia. Demonstrate where the Eastern European and Baltic countries are mindless little countries blindly following CIA orders and not countries wanting to have closer ties with Western European democracies over Soviet style Russian dictatorship. Tell us what evidence you have on how Russia, stuck in a 4 1/2 year war with an economy smaller than Italy's is going to win. Because you're basically the only one predicting that. BTW I don't take cluebait from the clueless. I also have no patience for prevaricators.
