We feel entitled. He gives us military. He gives us icebreakers; he has 11 icebreakers under construction, and we want to know if we can borrow them. We have nothing he needs. We have to treat his country with respect.
... Watch the pivot. For a year the line was “Canada is about to be taken over by China.” Now that Trump has gone full Xi fanboy, the line is “Canada is wrecking our relationship with China.” Pick one. They’ll pick whichever one keeps you scared of the country that isn’t going to invade you.
...A Nanos poll found 8 in 10 Canadians think the boycott is working. It’s not slowing down. It’s a habit now.
Americans aren’t with him either
This is the piece nobody in that Oval Office wants to say out loud six weeks from midterms.
Angus Reid: 59% of Americans oppose the new tariffs on Canada, 24% support them. Politico’s Public First poll: 56% of Americans say the Canada tariffs were wrong, and 46% say the United States is more to blame for the trade war versus 12% who blame Canada. More than 60% of Americans oppose renaming Lake Ontario; 14% like it. And when asked how the US should treat Canada, 78% of Americans said as a friend or ally. Four percent said enemy or threat. Four.
Meanwhile, 71% of Canadians say Carney was right to hit back, 57% say they’ll eat higher prices to keep standing up to Trump, and roughly half say he shouldn’t concede a thing. Trust in Americans is broken for six in ten of us, and 91% want the country less dependent on the US, full stop.
Canada is now a ballot issue in the States. Maine voters are talking about it. Border-town mayors in New York, Michigan, and Washington are talking about it. Kentucky distillers are talking about it. The man who started it can’t stay awake long enough to notice, so he’s trying to paper over it with $5,000 cheques he can’t write.

So, no. We’re not coming to Washington in three weeks. We’re not saying sorry, sir. We’re not apologizing for refusing to be a state, for keeping our lake, for building a defence industry that sells to Europe instead of begging Lockheed, or for making Americans pay for a trade war they never wanted with a country they like....

Residential school denialism rears its ugly head
Two days before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a distressing incident in Kamloops on Sunday:

Community members reported a group of masked men gathered on Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc land (Kamloops, BC) early this morning, Sunday, September 27. Photos shared by Cam Gottfriedson show about 20 men in black clothing, black caps and white face coverings, several carrying black flags, lined up along a roadside near the trailer park across from the band office around 7:30 a.m. Witnesses say the group was travelling in four vans, two white and two black, and later moved from Tk'emlúps into the Battle Street area inside Kamloops city limits. Police are aware, file 26-32569. CFJC Today reports that a logo on several of the men's clothing appears to match the emblem of Second Sons Canada, a white nationalist "Active Club." Founded by Jeremy MacKenzie, the group calls itself a men's nationalist club, but its leaders have welcomed neo-Nazis into its ranks and called for mass deportations of non-white people "at gunpoint." It has staged similar masked demonstrations in Ottawa, Regina, Dartmouth, Niagara-on-the-Lake, London and Orillia, and has posted photos claiming a presence in Kelowna. The timing and the place both matter. This happened three days before the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on Wednesday, on the land of the Nation that in 2021 announced potential unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. There is no place for racism, white supremacy or intimidation on Secwépemcúl'ecw, or anywhere else. The masks show the people wearing them know that. Poilievre has said nothing about this, but at least Kamloops MP Frank Caputo did post on X about it.

 

In her substack The Cult Following, conspiracy theories scholar Carmen Celestini writes an interesting article What the Kamloops action tells us about what conspiracy narratives do for extremist movements. Second Sons Canada and Denialism. She concludes:

...What we are witnessing is the relationship with a conspiracy theory, creating an online movement that eventually erupts in the real world, and demands an institutional response. Movements online can and do mobilize, not only in dark participation, and hate posting, but also in recruitment with real world consequences. Often we dismiss conspiracists yet continually we feel the impact of their hate, fears, and rhetoric, not only in their real world actions but in the political response of populists. Condemnation by politicians does not always result in political response, but the promises of populists to respond to the fears, constructed victimhood, and grievances often result in the loss of freedoms of the group(s) presumed to be the threat. Today Indigenous Services Minister Mandy Gull-Masty was noncommittal about the possibility of criminalizing residential school denialism.

NDP MP Leah Gazan has a private member’s bill currently before the House of Commons which would criminalize as hate speech condoning, denying, downplaying or justifying residential schools. That is the language used to criminalize Holocaust denialism in the Criminal Code. In a media statement issued Monday, Gazan said survivors deserve more than just words of condemnation for what happened in Kamloops on Sunday.

We need to engage and not ignore the very strong hate rhetoric online, and the consequences of real world actions. Pierre Poilievre’s social media was focused on posting about gas prices, posting pictures of his family’s peaceful weekend, and claiming that the Conservative Party “will keep you safe. With new laws that make sure child-killing pedophiles stay in maximum security prison for the rest of their lives.” He did not acknowledge what occurred in BC. Prime Minister Mark Carney did post about the “vile act” in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, and called for all Canadians to take responsibility for the legacy of residential schools. We do indeed need to take responsibility as a nation, but we must also act against the actions of active clubs for their actions, inspired by hate and conspiracy. The sympathetic reaction to Second Sons’ actions on X is concerning as the mainstreaming of the hate of denialism and conspiracy theories becomes more entrenched.
