2025 roundup, Part Two

Hey gang, I threatened to post another 2025 round up if I found more posts... and here they are!

For the life of me I can't comprehend the demand for so many Year 2025 in Review pieces. We were there, mostly conscious - why do we need reminding?

— Giles Wilkes (@gilesyb.bsky.social) December 30, 2025 at 1:58 AM
Well, yes.
But its still worthwhile to take a glance back and see whether we have come far enough, and if we're going in the right direction:

👏👏 Canada is quietly but firmly putting the bully in the corner. "[Felon's] worldview crashed into a wall of reality in 2025 when Canada, America’s polite northern neighbor, finally decided to stop apologizing and start fighting back."

Samuel Wynn Warde / The Art of Living
Canada Flips the Script, Hits Trump Where It Hurts the Most
The Art of the Self-Own
Donald Trump has always operated with the sophisticated geopolitical strategy of a mob boss collecting protection money. He assumes that leverage is a one-way street where the loud dictate terms and the quiet submit.
This worldview crashed into a wall of reality in 2025 when Canada, America’s polite northern neighbor, finally decided to stop apologizing and start fighting back.
Warde then summarizes Trump's attempted bullying, Canada's pivot to Europe, and diplomatic initiatives in Greenland. He ends with this:
.... Mark Carney, the technocrat who replaced Justin Trudeau, understands something Trump never will: leverage isn’t just about size; it’s about stability.
Trump thrives on chaos, but supply chains, defense contracts, and economies run on predictability. By offering stability to Europe and Greenland, and by imposing the cost of chaos on American industry, Canada has flipped the script.
Trump wanted to make Canada the 51st state. Instead, he forced it to become a European power and united the Canadian people against him in a way no domestic politician ever could.
Trump fucked around, and now, spectacularly, he is finding out.

CBC also has a number of 2025 roundup pieces, like these:

Canada 🇨🇦 Elbows up in 2025: How a year of Canadian boycotts on U.S. products played out Canadians hit the U.S. where it hurts: booze, travel and orange juice Natalie Stechyson · CBC News · Posted: Dec 30, 2025 3:00 AM CST | www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Another Canadian MVP for 2025 is definitely Charlie Angus. I really appreciate of all the work he has put into organizing, and towards building antifascist media in Canada. Critically important, especially as the regime in the US expands their censorship and propaganda. Thanks Charlie! Keep it up!

Here is a fascinating year-end IPolitics interview with Defense Minister David McGuinty. The whole interview is worth reading but this was the most important exchange, I thought:
...Can you give me a status update on Canada’s security relationship with the U.S.? The prime minister has said repeatedly that our pre-existing security partnership with the U.S. is over, but the government has left the door open to joining Donald Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ program, and we’re also still looking at buying American F-35s.
How would you define the relationship right now?

I want you to think of security and defence in terms of a home that is built with a foundation. One side of the foundation is in the United States, while the other part is across the border in Canada.
Now, imagine 50 rows of cinderblocks that hold the house up on both sides of the border. The first 30 or 40 rows are cinderblocks that uphold defence, security and, to a certain extent, intelligence. I have seen no daylight, cracks, shifting or movement in that foundation at all.
In my conversations with U.S. Secretary Pete Hegseth, particularly when I spent two hours face-to-face with him at the Pentagon and in subsequent communications, we are moving in lockstep. That doesn’t mean we’re not going to continue to have important negotiations on fiscal and financial matters, but we’re going to continue to manage this relationship well.
We have no choice. That’s what we’re going to do, and that’s what I’m trying to do on the defence side.
How have you found Secretary Hegseth to deal with, on a personal level?
I’ve found him serious. I’ve found him disciplined with his team. I’ve found that we were able to find a couple core areas to work together on, including this question of a continental shield.
We have continental and international responsibilities. On the continental side, we’re continuing to cooperate, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the NORAD modernization efforts we’re pursuing. We’re making enormous progress in ensuring that a system that has been in place for 80 years and has kept us safe remains strong.
We’re moving forward together. We’re continuing to make progress, and that’s how we’re managing this as we go forward...

And of course, The Beaverton:

Why has NO ONE ELSE ever done a podcast that recaps the year's events!?!? - Poilievre's slow-motion implosion! - The Jays (nearly) won it all! - Mark Carney is Prime Minister, I guess! Available on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and wherever you get your podcasts!

Its not all light and laughter -- here are the worst Canadian stories of this year.
Canada needs to stop with the anti-trans provincial laws:

2025 has been a devastating year for trans people in Canada. Here's a year in review of all anti-trans legal developments out here since the beginning of the year. celeste.lgbt/en/2025/12/2...

— Celeste Trianon (@celeste.lgbt) December 28, 2025 at 12:57 PM
Celeste writes:
If there’s one way to summarize what 2025 has been like for trans people in Canada, it’s that shit’s been going down. Anti-trans laws have truly evolved from fringe idea to a core part of right-wing policy-making — despite the fact that lives are at stake.

Safety in Sport Act was allegedly about protecting girls from transgender girls in contact sports and so that girls could prosper in elite (or elite pathway) sports. None of that applies in this case. The purpose is hate against transgender people.

Canada needs to become a haven for US refugees. I thought it was terrible that we sent these poor families back:

Natch, when desperate migrants cross our border in deepest winter and two of their blameless children are sent to hospital with frostbite, the doyenne of the 🍁gun cult reacts with true Christmas charity: “What a crock. Complete abuse of our system.” Are there no poorhouses? Are there no gaols? 🎄🙄🎄

We need to give our heads a shake - the United States is no longer a safe third country for anyone.
Finally, Canada needs to get our citizens back from those DHS concentration camps:

Over 400 Canadians have been detained by MAGA. Crickets from our leaders. @amnesty.org has released a damning investigation into torture and abuse at ICE detention centres. This is a @meidascanada.ca investigation into torture state USA. @meidastouch.com www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxKz...

Speaking of the US, I think we can conclude that the United States is NOT taking the right direction now:

At year end, the dividing line in politics today is defined by dignity. Dignity is something that can't be taken away. It can only be surrendered voluntarily. We saw the most powerful business leaders willing to surrender dignity while everyday Americans stood tall.

The only quiet days I can remember are the weekends when everyone thought he might be dead.

Throughout 2025, I have been profoundly upset by the terrible ICE Gestapo and the thousands of people disappearing into DHS Concentration Camps - the Stephen Miller /Kristie Noem nightmare is the most horrific manifestation of Trump fascism and it makes the United States unsafe for everyone.
The ridiculousness is beyond parody:

50 ICE agents swarming a public library to arrest one person. This isn’t policing — it’s authoritarian spectacle. Armed intimidation, fear as policy, and taxpayer money burned to terrorize communities. This is fascism in plain sight. #TrumpWatch #Resist

But I have also seen stories of judges and grand juries refusing to indict people who are speaking up against ICE, and other stories of people being released from the camps - this gives me a little hope:

TIKTOKER SHOT BY ICE HAS INDICTMENT THROWN OUT Carlitos Ricardo Parias was shot in the elbow by ICE during an immigration arrest in October. A judge tossed the indictment after finding the government violated his constitutional rights, and it looks intentional. 1/2

A federal judge handed Trump a massive loss...canceling Kilmar Ábrego García’s trial over apparent bogus DOJ charges. A hearing next month will determine if the case is retaliatory, potentially leading to a full dismissal. García was released from a detention center early last week. More to come.

Good to see this young man reunited with his mom💜 she didn’t give up! — For the record, you have to be one heartless SOB to steal and imprison an autistic child. ICE agents should be increasingly more ashamed with every passing day. youtube.com/post/UgkxBwh...

It took hours and pressure from local officials before David Leussler's friend was found and released from ICE detention. "But it will take pressure from those that believe in free speech, and the rule of law, before the release of our beloved country," Leussler writes.

NEW! Our incredible legal team at @immcouncil.org just secured a victory in federal court, reinforcing a ruling blocking blocking ICE from taking unaccompanied children into ICE detention on their 18th birthday, and re-detaining previously-released teenagers. Proud to work with such awesome lawyers!

This is a useful chart too, because it shows how pointless and mean US immigration enforcement is now:

NEW: ICE has finally released post-shutdown detention data. The latest data reveals that a full 40%(!) of people arrested in the interior and held in ICE detention have no criminal record; no criminal charges or prior convictions. That is up from just 4% when Trump took office.
