Today's News: Olympic Catch-up, Bad Bunny and the grasses, Trump take bridge, and the Epstein Tsunami

Olympic Catch-up

Megan Oldham bronze!

View on Threads

The family and friends reactions one of my favourite parts of the Olympics. They’ve been on this journey too. And they couldn’t be in Beijing for Megan Oldham’s debut. But they’re here today for her bronze medal for Canada. Outstanding.

Ice Dance

Hockey

But no word yet on whether team captain Marie Philip Poulin will be back after her injury during this game.
Finally, here's another great Olympics video - the Haka dance starts at the 4 minute mark:

Bad Bunny and those grasses
Moving on, I was glad that Seattle won the Superbowl, particularly after their baseball fans cheered for the Blue Jays last fall.
But it was the entertainment that everyone talked about. The pre-show and half-time show were terrific:

I love Green Day so much and I’m so very happy they performed‘American Idiot’ because, well…you know… 😁

BREAKING: Bad Bunny smashes MAGA haters with a record-breaking 133.5 million estimated viewers for his halftime show, making it the most-watched Super Bowl performance in history. Bad Bunny’s decision to perform solely in Spanish and proudly represent his Puerto Rican heritage. Take that Trump! 🏈🥳🥳🥳

On his Present Age substack, Parker Molloy writes The NFL Told You Why It Booked Bad Bunny The league's own executives explained the strategy, on the record, for years. Conservative media pretended it wasn't happening.
Last night, Bad Bunny performed at the Super Bowl LX halftime show. He walked through a recreated sugarcane field at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, past guys playing dominoes and a piragua cart and a couple getting actually married on stage. He brought out Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin. The scoreboard read “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.” He closed by saying “God Bless America,” naming countries across the hemisphere one by one, and holding up a football that read “TOGETHER, WE ARE AMERICA.”
Conservatives lost it.
...The complaint, if you can call it that, boiled down to: Bad Bunny performed in Spanish, in America, at an American football game, and this was somehow an attack on the country.
...Roger Goodell didn’t go woke. The NFL booked the single most-streamed artist on the planet — an American citizen, by the way, born in Puerto Rico — for the same reason it’s now playing regular-season games in Madrid and São Paulo and Melbourne. The same reason it spent $32 million on a flag football league timed to the 2028 Olympics. The same reason it runs 75 Spanish-language broadcasts a season.
The NFL told you why they did this. Its own executives have been saying it, on the record, for years. But that’s not a story that works for the people who need everything to be about the culture war, so they pretended it wasn’t happening.
“It’s mathematically impossible for the league to grow without Latinos.”
That’s not me editorializing. That’s Marissa Solis, the NFL’s senior vice president of global brand and consumer marketing, talking to CNBC in October 2024. The person whose job it is to figure out how the NFL grows its audience, explaining, on the record, exactly how the NFL plans to grow its audience....
Exactly why Canada has also broadcast Hockey Night in Canada in English, French, Cree, Inuktitut, Hindi, Punjabi, Tagalog, Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese.

Today I was seeing great posts about those "sugar cane grasses" that created Bad Bunny's world:

Trump Take Bridge
Trump flapped around on Monday about how he wasn't going to allow the new Detroit-Windsor bridge to open because blah-blah-blah:

Trump's "Canada as whipping boy" pattern is now clear - every week or two, Trump will erupt with some stupid fantasy complaint about Canada (Davos two weeks ago, our de-icing policies last week, now a new bridge) to throw us off-balance, to give Poilievre an opportunity to find fault with the Carney government, to justify Albexit, and to distract from his own declining poll numbers. What a buffoon.

The Epstein Tsunami
The Epstein Files have become a slow-rolling tsunami, gradually drowning Trump's government and governments in Europe too.
Today was the first day that the DOJ let congressional Democrats look at unredacted Epstein Files. Cue the explosion in three....two....one...

Q: "Who are the six men whose names you saw [redacted in the Epstein Files]?" Rep. Ro Khanna: "We are going to push DOJ to release those. They had photographs, as marked, of co-conspirators…and there's no reason that they should be covering up those names."

@repstansbury.bsky.social: “Absolutely” will name names in unredacted Epstein files The Trump White House appears to be standing by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick as calls for his resignation grow over Epstein ties. Rep. Melanie Stansbury joins The Weeknight.

GOP Sen Lummis says she’s changed her mind after the new Epstein revelations today: “Initially my reaction to all this was, I don’t care. I don’t see what the big deal is. But now I see what the big deal is. The members of Congress who were pushing this were not wrong!”

At The Verge, an article by Elizabeth Lopatto describes How the men in the Epstein files defeated #MeToo The emails show the “anti-woke” crusaders are afraid of accountability.
...Consider all the “contrarians” and “anti-woke” warriors who show up in the latest dump: Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Larry Summers, Steve Bannon, and of course, Donald Trump. With apologies to George Carlin: It’s a big club, and the worst people are in it — because their interests are all aligned. Pushing back on social justice, it turns out, was coordinated.
...Being able to see their emails makes something very clear: The “anti-woke” movement was not a genteel intellectual inquiry, made by disinterested parties who cared deeply about free speech. It is a social circle of powerful people who feel threatened by #MeToo. Reading through the emails, it’s possible to see that Epstein himself coordinated pushback against #MeToo. Looking back, it seems obvious that sinking #MeToo also led to where we are now: a place where laws simply don’t apply if you have enough money and power. The same players are involved.....
Later in the article - Trigger Warning for Pedophilia --Lopatto flags some particularly upsetting and grotesque emails from men whose names were redacted
... we don’t know who Epstein was emailing when he wrote “I loved the torture video.” Or who he was telling in 2009 that that freedom felt “fresh, firm, and creamy.” Or who sent this creepy 2014 email, which reads, “Thank you for a fun night...Your littlest girl was a little naughty.” Or this one, from 2013, which offers to introduce Epstein to a Russian friend and says, “she is fun and gorgeous! Ahh...perfect skin and incredible shape. However, be gentle with her and not a naughty one plz!!!” Or this 2017 email, which reads, “Naughty ? It’s like in lingerie ? Just wanna be correct. Thank you for deserts .”
This is what elite impunity looks like, and it is coming directly from the so-called Department of Justice. It’s hard not to read these files and come to the conclusion that Epstein helped engineer the ultimate elite impunity — in which our society has been totally destroyed so the richest and most powerful men in the world can do whatever they want....
I wonder if the names of the rich men who wrote these emails have now been revealed to the Congresspeople who are reading these files.

with the release of the Epstein files "conspiracy theorists" hereby reserve the right to instead be referred to as Professors of Theoretical Conspiracy
