Today's News: Playing politics against refugees in Canada, the State of the Union and the state of the NHL

Poilievre and the Conservatives have apparently decided their fortunes could improve if they can convince Canadians to play politics against refugees:

We’re back to the racist and MAGA scapegoating of immigrants and asylum seekers for the failing healthcare systems. #QP

Sounds like things have been a little testy in the House lately:

Steven MacKinnon on the Conservative motion to review asylum benefits: "It is very revealing to me that Conservatives went away for a week and tried to think of an issue and the first thing they think of is to punch down at some very, very vulnerable people."

POILIEVRE: Meanwhile, under his leadership, and after 11 years of Liberal government, we have 6 million Canadians who cannot find a family doctor. CARNEY: Mr. Speaker, 11 years? I just got here. The member opposite has been here his whole life.

FRASER: "You can imagine [Conservatives] sitting around saying, what are we going to prioritize this week to help us raise some money? Well, could we tackle perhaps the Canada-US relationship? No, that's just going to upset our members who think Canadians are having a hissy fit."

Yes, I know Canadians have concerns with the problems of Canada's immigration and refugee systems - this Globe and Mail editorial makes some good points:
Ottawa places a sensible limit on the right to claim asylum (gift link)
Refugee advocates are worried about proposed changes in the federal government’s immigration and border bill. They fear that restricting access to asylum hearings for foreign nationals who have been in Canada for more than a year will put genuine refugees in danger.
Canada’s commitment to helping refugees is important, and this country needs to continue its tradition of helping those at risk. However, the proposed change in Bill C-12 to limit refugee claims from people already in the country is a sensible measure to prevent abuse of the system.
Traditionally, Canada has been generous to refugee claimants, and numbers were kept in check by strict visa measures. But Canada is facing a different situation today. After years of loose visa policies, more than 2.3 million people are in the country on temporary work or study permits.
With a reduction in work permits and many pathways for permanent residency closing, it’s not political fear mongering to suggest that some who don’t want to leave are making asylum claims to extend their stay. Even if a claim is ultimately rejected, it buys time – the current wait is 17 months – for the people to explore other avenues to remain in the country.
Canada must not abandon its values, but we cannot be naive about how we manage our immigration system....
This is a useful point to keep in mind too:

The Feds want to “tighten borders” but more policing doesn’t actually stop migration. It just makes it more dangerous. It pushes people to hidden crossings, and heavier reliance on human smuggling. [end]

When you see statistics like this, its no wonder the Conservatives are desperately casting around for an issue:

That said, I also thought this piece was interesting. Pollster Kyla Ronellenfitsch, president of Relay Strategies, writes NARRATIVE RESET - Stop saying young Canadians are conservative Before I have an aneurysm
For the past few years, both in Canada and the US, we’ve been stuck in a predictable generational panic. There is always something that the youngs are doing wrong, or that signals the end of civilization as we know it. In this case, it’s the story that young voters are overwhelmingly conservative.
Narratives get settled and are stubbornly slow to be updated. Much of our understanding of young Canadians’ political attitudes was set before Justin Trudeau’s resignation, when he was down by 20+ points in the polls. On top of that, we see a constant stream of online discourse arguing that Gen Z has lost its mind – they’re all tradwives, looksmaxxers, and Andrew Tate devotees. Our awareness of these trends exists for a reason. X, TikTok, and YouTube serve creators with extreme views on a platter. But this isn’t the story of the median young Canadian....
She continues with a detailed analysis of some polling done in November. The statistic that really startled me was this one:
...One of the most stunning pieces of data from a comprehensive poll of young Canadians I conducted in November showed how many were actually fine with both Poilievre and Carney. At that time, 44% of young Canadians said they had a favourable or neutral view of both Carney and Poilievre. Just 20% liked Carney but disliked Poilievre, and 16% had a favourable view of Poilievre and an unfavourable view of Carney. This is vastly different from older Canadians, particularly seniors....
When Poilievre was +25 among young Canadians, it didn’t mean this generation was deeply and rigidly conservative. As today’s polls show, that’s clearly not the case. It also didn’t show that they had some widespread great love for Pierre Poilievre. Rather, it reflected widespread, multi-generational fatigue with Justin Trudeau’s government. This exasperation meant something different to young voters, as most had never experienced another government as adults. The Trudeau Liberals represented a status quo that was not working for them; they wanted change. It’s just that deep....
Next, about that State of the Union address:
First, some cartoons:

Why didn't anyone yell "QUIET, PIGGY!" at the State of the Union address?

I didn't see much posting about anything Trump said, except that he lied about just about everything.
The most reaction I saw today was about the men's hockey team going to the White House and the SOTU, while the women's hockey team refused Trump's grudging invite.

Trump doesn’t want the U.S. men’s hockey team at the State of the Union to celebrate them. He wants them there so it looks like they’re celebrating him.

A rapper and reality show star extended an invitation to the U.S. women’s hockey team to celebrate their gold medal win with him after Trump ridiculed them during a phone call with the victorious U.S. men’s team.

The whole thing is turning into a PR disaster for the NHL, and for the Canadian teams these US players are on. Connor Hellebuyck plays for Winnipeg, Auston Matthews for Toronto, Brady Tkachuk and Jake Sanderson for Ottawa. People are saying Matthews yelled "Close the northern border!" to Trump during the phone call. And apparently Brady Tkachuk said something about "hating" the Canadian team. Hmmm....that'll make them all so popular with fans and teammates now, won't it.

Kinda amazing that Trump shits on Canada and Mexico every day, and there's the Mexican-American captain of Canada's Toronto Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews, standing behind him as he defiles an Olympic Gold Medal He hates your mother and your fans Auston Matthews but - you do you: be a collaborator

I thought this was an interesting observation:

I'm going to tell you something as a Trump biographer. I mean it seriously. You need to understand that Trump gets something close to sexual excitement from describing acts of violence. If you wonder why his SOTU speeches always include graphic violence, that's why. It's for him.
