Mark Carny, Scott Moe, and Bell Canada have just announced a 50 BILLION dollar data center to be built outside Regina, in conjunction with First Nations, and on standards to meet environmenta restrictions. WOW... Take that Musk, Altman, Zuckerberg, Trump. I ONLY support, Environmentally Friendly.

How is Trump going to make any money from his tariffs if he keeps lifting the ones for the products that lots of Americans really need to buy? There are currently bigger protests in Toronto against Carney's investment summit than there are in the whole of the US against the trade war. Just in case it wasn't clear that Americans don't care.

🇨🇦 CBC reports Trump’s new 50% tariffs hit 110 Canadian products, while tariffs on salt, cement & toilet paper were dropped after costs started hurting Americans. That tells Canada something useful: pressure works. Where are the U.S. vulnerabilities Canada can target without hurting ourselves more?

And in the category of "fuck that!"
Democrats keep trying to guilt-trip Canadians into backing down. Fuck off. Deal with your own mess. This is your problem to solve, not ours. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

Europe Dreams
The Wall Street Journal reporting about how Canada would be joining the European Union was overblown, but Carney is definitely seeking closer ties with the EU and I think its going to be great.
There are, of course, questions about what it all means, and Carney hasn't been answering just yet - he's been a tad busy - so of course Poilievre and the CPC are starting the usual shitstorm. Paul Wells writes Carney’s Euro-vision: could everybody please calm down If the French take over, can I get a decent omelet?
I don’t usually write posts this short, but some people are losing their minds and I think it’s important that everyone touch grass.I've also seen posts from young people talking about how they would love to be able to move to Amsterdam to work for a summer or a year, and I can see lots of Canadians who would love to buy a little property in Spain or Italy, and wouldn't it be great if the rest of the EU can holiday in Quebec and the Rockies easy peasy.
1. Wall Street Journal has an article saying Mark Carney is seeking “associate membership” in the EU.
2. Several Conservative MPs, ranging from Roman Baber to Jamil Jivani to Pierre Poilievre, have addressed this news as evidence of Canada’s coming betrayal at Carney’s hands. In comically apocalyptic terms.
3. Problems with the WSJ article include (a) there’s no such thing as associate membership in the EU, though I suppose something could be cooked up; (b) every EU foundational text says only a “European State” can join the EU, which is interpreted as a geographical requirement and was grounds for rejecting Morocco in 1987. So Canada will never be in the EU and any “associate” thingie would be improvised, and should be judged on what it contains if it ever happens.
4. My best information from Carney’s office, after the last WSJ story about Carney, is that they find the WSJ prone to collecting torqued stuff from European sources who wish their lives were more exciting, and running it as gospel. Today some anonymous sources were telling other news organizations the new WSJ story is more of the same.
5. If the Conservative Party of Canada aspired to govern, it could ignore the WSJ story, which not one Canadian in 500 has read. Or it could write down 500 concrete questions of fact, discard 480 of them, and prepare to ask the good ones when they get a chance. Poilievre went straight to rickety parallel constructions on whatever they’re calling Twitter this week: “We will NEVER be the 51st U.S. state. And we will NEVER be the 28th EU state.” It is long past urgent for somebody to break out the Jaws of Life and pry the overheating smartphone from the twitching Conservative leader’s hands.
6. On social media, David Coletto is curtain-raising some polling he did on all of this. By a plurality, if invited to consider EU membership off the top of their heads, more Canadians think that sounds good than not. But it’s also impossible (see above). When the question is brought down to something more practical — closer Canada-EU relations broadly speaking — support grows to 8 to 1.
7. Lots of Conservatives campaigned for Brexit in their spare time in 2016. That’s their right, but they were wrong then and they are even more seriously on the wrong side of Canadian public opinion today than they were then. The party’s instincts on Europe are loser instincts.
8. You know who agrees with Roman Baber that Europe is “falling apart. Full of waste, over regulation & terrible immigration policy, where censorship thrives”? JD Vance, Elon Musk, and the Trump Administration’s 2025 National Security Policy. For millions of other Canadians, Europe is a place. Or rather, dozens of places. Distant, sometimes expensive, but not that different from home.Baber’s X feed is fun to read: on Saturday it was BUT THE CHINESE and today it’s been BUT THE EURO-DECADENTS. Yeah, put that guy in charge of strategy!
9. There’s been chatter among Conservatives in recent weeks that Carney is trying to gin up an election issue. Maybe, they say, it’s America vs. Europe as a future dance partner for Canada. I hate to debate things that haven’t happened yet, but let’s just say that if we get to Christmas and Mark Carney has managed to force a federal election, whose goal would be to win him the majority he already has, I’ll owe you all a beer.
10. Stephen Harper is at Carney’s Investment Summit in Toronto. Stephen Harper negotiated an investment treaty with China. Stephen Harper pushed for free trade with Europe long before the Europeans wanted anything to do with it. And Stephen Harper is about five times stronger on pushing back against Trump than any prominent current Conservative MP seems to know how to be. Recent polling suggests Carney’s getting a lot of support from former Conservative voters. I have theories about why.
Today's Dispatches from the Trade War
Carney and Macron are meeting at St. Pierre and Miquelon meeting Sept 20. This will draw international attention to these two islands and is, I think, a message to Trump that Europe will have something to say if he continues to try to muscle Canada into line

On the Emmys Red Carpet
Sally Field won for Remarkably Bright Creatures (a great movie, well worth seeing) which was filmed in Vancouver, and she told the world how much she supports Canada

Hey Carney, send Celine Dion as Ambassador to the EU. That should smooth the way.

"Democrats keep trying to guilt-trip Canadians into backing down."
We will never get back anything we give up to President Slump. It will be lost forever in the memory-swamp-hole know as the United States of Amnesia.
"Mark Carny, Scott Moe, and Bell Canada" ...
data centers, austerity, pipelines and privatized airports ...
Issues that Carny was touting in the last election?
Wake up Sheeple.
A glimmer of hope?
"NDP wins Calgary-Shaw by-election in closely fought contest.
Kyle Campbell beat the UCP’s Mike Derry 7,461 votes to 6,879"
NPoV, Carney's track record showed we were going to get neoliberalism good and hard when we elected him - privatization, deregulation, austerity, upward transfer of wealth. The other option was Maple MAGA. Given what was on offer, I still think Canadians made the right choice.
That said, I agree we can't just keep kicking the can down the road. Neoliberalism creates the concentration of wealth in a few hands that leads to US-style oligarchy.
She certainly seems to be taking Paris by storm!
No quibbles on choosing Carny over PP.
As to his track record.... he presented as the banker with a heart and a soul worried about climate change and inequality. He basically let that image float through to the end of election campaign. And then it changed abruptly. He started purging all the progressives from his party, and is carrying on now, like Harper.
I salute your prescience or better knowledge. 😉
