That Gordie Howe Bridge Opening

Some good lines here from Mulcair:

And on a side note, here is what Carney said about CUSMA on Thursday:

Because Canada is helping Ukraine, Russia is calling us "warmonger"

Defence Minister David McGuinty on Russia calling Canada a "warmonger": It's not unexpected ... We would expect to see the Russians to be critical because they don't appreciate the fact that NATO is coming together to assist a country that's in need.

What an honor to be branded a "warmonger" by a rogue nation led by war criminals. Fuck Putin. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Speaking of NATO, here is a useful observation from Phillips O'Brien

The US is reducing its military footprint in Europe to the degree that it will do nothing to defend NATO states against Russia, but enough that the Trump administration will hope that it can still bully democratic Europe.

Trump Nodding Off

Iran is Over!...no its not....yes it is....no its not...
I think Trump is now at "peace deal" #40. I expect he is wanting to make some big announcement at his birthday party.
O'Brien is likely right.

Seems to be a very good chance that the last two nights of the US bombing Iran was Trump trying to look all tough before throwing in the towel to the Iranian government.

This doesn't get discussed enought either

It is frightening how little American popular discourse is focusing on the fact that the American military, obeying the orders of Donald Trump, is committing what the US government would call war crimes if they were committed by any other country. And this is on top of the American policy of summarily executing suspected criminals in international waters. And launching attacks in flagrant violation of international law forbidding wars of aggression (the crime for which we hanged Nazis.) And the seizure of the resources of subjugated countries. And the continual threats of much worse, up to and including nuclear attacks and genocide. American foreign policy is now setting ablaze the past 85 years of American foreign policy. And most Americans, it seems, haven’t noticed.

It was the day that the name came down...
Trump's name was supposed to be removed on Friday night from the Kennedy Centre, so hundreds gathered to cheer.  But at 2 am, the only live stream I can still find is Meidas Touch:

After a long, long day of the slowest scaffold building in the history of scaffolds, it looks like there are finally some tarps around the scaffold and supposedly the name is being removed right now.
Personally, I suspect Todd Blanche is still trying to get Alito to sign a shadow docket order to stop the removal but Roberts won't let him do it.

Just past midnight, the MSNOW stream from the Kennedy Center alone has 99k viewers. Watching a bunch or construction workers standing on some scaffolding.

I saw this last night -- and today, it was Larin who scored for Canada!
View on Threads

In the NYT The Athletic, Toronto staff writer Joshua Kloke says [gift link]:
...No stranger to criticism from the Canada fans, Larin didn’t panic as he stepped onto the field with the pressure on.
Their No. 2 goalscorer of all time received a pass from Promise David, spun past a Bosnia defender and guided a powerful finish home to make it 1-1. It was the instinctive play of a 31-year-old forward in his first involvement on the field, only 121 seconds after he was introduced.
He ran to the corner and plugged his fingers in his ears. He had silenced his doubters. The goal secured a draw for Canada and the men’s team’s first point at a World Cup.
Asked to explain the celebration, he said: “Just to shut everyone up.”
After making that gesture, he kissed the Canada Soccer badge. Hours beforehand, Larin had posted on Instagram, “never stopped appreciating what it means to wear this badge.”
Others might have stopped appreciating what Larin has done — and can still do. He made his debut in 2014, and despite scoring 31 times for his country, he’s been no stranger to criticism. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time during Canada’s low points makes you easy fodder. Many had lost faith in Larin, whose last goal for Canada came in 2024. For the World Cup opener, it seemed like Marsch had lost faith in him too.
But Larin? No, he knew exactly what he was doing. Born and raised just northwest of Toronto Stadium in Brampton, he never lost faith.
“I made a lot of sacrifices to come to this moment,” Larin said. “I’ve been put in this position before, and I’ve always showed up.”,,,

What if we rename the Gordie Howe Bridge? Maybe the Trump Epstein Friendship Bridge?

Or build him a golf course named that?

Or close the all but one of the customs gates on the Ambassador Bridge for 'repairs and renovations'. Both ways.

My son is a long haul trucker going back and forth between Canada and the US frequently during the week. Based in southwestern Ontario he has specific instructions from his company to not use the Ambassador Bridge. I suspect cost is the main reason. Also, since he’s paid by the mile, it’s an inefficient route as far as he’s concerned
