Catching up with the news: Signs of the Apocalypse, Trade War Update, and some World Series comments

Turned out to be a busy weekend, didn't it.

Flavio Bolsonaro has been ordered to surrender his passport. Russia no longer has an ally in Serbia. The Milwaukee Brewers might win the World Series. Maybe the Universe is trying to turn itself rightside up again. BUT there's work to be done. Get some rest. Gnight, little Earth.

Signs of the Apocalypse - a regular round-up of the crazy stuff happening down south
The closer the Mid-Terms get, the nuttier Trump is getting.
He wrote a 1,300 word post on Sunday about Bill Maher, FFS.
Way to stick to the point, guy.
At Trump's Mississippi rally, this happened:

“SHOVE THAT BALLROOM UP YOUR FAT ASS!”

Obama and Clinton are doing rallies too
Bush hasn't said anything in public, but some of the Bush family have announced they're voting Democrat.

Two big Trump administration scandals are breaking now.
First, a new Senate House committee report just released about Trump and Epstein:

the biggest presidential scandal in history but the political media largely acts as if it's not happening. hasan piker has received more mainstream political media coverage over the last 6 months than trump's connections with epstein has

The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

Next a new book about Jared Kushner, blackmail and bribery. Here's a summary:

This Threads post links to the complete New Yorker story.

Dean Blundell makes a funny point:

Quick question for the comment section. When the Trump regime finally collapses under its own weight, and the subpoenas start flying, who gets on the plane first? Jared Kushner, with the Saudi money already parked offshore? Donald Trump, who has never once stayed anywhere the bill came due? Or Elon Musk, who has rockets? And where do they go? Argentina, the way Peter Thiel is setting up his bolt-hole and the way half the Third Reich did after 1945? Or somewhere with a nicer beach and no extradition treaty? Rank them. Pick the country. Winner gets nothing but the satisfaction of being right before everyone else.

All in all, I hope Trump is doomed now.
This describes right-wing losses around the world

The fact that Ukraine took out four Russian data centers/bot farms helped, I'm sure. So, yes, we can.

And this describes right wing losses even in Florida early voting. Florida!

I think we're getting into Something Is Happening territory, it's just not clear yet whether Something is "winning" or "lol Florida is close and the DeSantismander fell to pieces"

On a side note, I agree with this sentiment too

Dispatches from the Canada-US Trade War
I wonder if someone read the riot act to Hoekstra? I'm not sure how the media could take an actual press release "out of context" but that's what Hoekstra is saying now about his stupid Fact Sheet last week.

After spending all week accusing Canada of election meddling, U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra now claims he was "taken out of context" and hasn't actually concluded we interfered. Funny how fast a bully changes their tune when Canada refuses to back down. πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ FO Petey πŸ–•πŸ€¬ ~ Canadian Outlook

Some observations about NATO spending:

I think this Ottawa meeting will turn out to be one of the most significant in Canadian history. For one thing, it seems to be a first step in discarding the Indian Act.

Mark Carney: "It's sobering that this is the first time in over two decades that first ministers and First Nations have met together. This is an important opportunity, yes, to share perspectives, to listen, to learn, but above all, to commit to action. So let's seize this opportunity."

Lots of political news from Canada lately, with BC voting Conservative, and Olivia Chow re-elected handily in Toronto, along with lots of other municipal results.
Here are some good comments:

BC nobly sacrifices good governance to teach one man about hubris

David Eby’s cynical election call in BC was followed by an NDP campaign that was entirely focussed on trying to portray the Conservatives and Lorne Doerkson as evil. Didn’t work. As so often happens with negative campaigns, the strategy produced a record low turnout - around 48% - compared to mid to high 50s in last four elections. Voters who might have supported Eby stayed home. Bad call, worse strategy.

B.C. Might Be Ready for the Normals Who the heck is Lorne Doerkson? First off, the name could spell trouble, but right now he’s anything near appearing as a dork. He’s the mild-mannered guy who seemed to come out of nowhere and helped turn around his party’s fortunes in a way we haven’t seen in years. And in British Columbia, a province famous for its wonderfully wacky politics, maybe we shouldn’t be so surprised. David Eby looked polished and smart to those not really following the nitty gritty of BC politics, but his snap-election gamble came off as cynical and badly misjudged. Now Doerkson seems like a different kind of Conservative: not a populist caricature, not picking fights for the sake of it, just normal (a term I see springing up everywhere with this guy,) practical, and almost boring. Maybe that’s exactly the point. If a more moderate approach can win broad support on the left coast, perhaps Canada is ready for the normals to continue to take over, while the far-left and far-right fringes get pushed back toward the margins. It seems to be the winning approach. My sketch for the October 27 edition of The Hamilton Spectator:

I don't follow Toronto politics at all, but I was glad to see Chow re-elected. She gave a good acceptance speech at least, while Bradford couldn't seem to stop himself from talking on and on - even his little girl was holding her hands over her ears at one point near the end.

Brad Bradford strikes out. Well done, Toronto.

On a side note, here's a great comment from the only remaining progressive premier west of the St. Lawrence Seaway. I love this guy!

Some World Series comments
The Brewers are up 3-0 over the Rays now, and good for them. An extraordinary team, and Tampa seems to be completely flummoxed. This year its been relaxing to not worry about which team wins.

Monday night's game was outstanding - 8 runs in the 5th inning after 2 outs? Wow

The Brewers video team is SO GOOD at this

I think this is something you would only ever see in baseball

after the seventh inning when the brewers pulled ahead my mom said “you see that, al? they’re ahead!” (alan is her deceased brother, who was a massive brewers fan. she brought his photo into the living room so he can watch the series with us.)

And before the season is over, I just have to share my favorite baseball scene one more time:
