Sunday Funday: Some good cartoons plus Interesting Posts, Funny Posts, Getting Old(er), Carney Hat-trick, TrumpWatch, Animal Crackers

Today was another "No Kings" day in the US. I've seen some criticism that these protests aren't happening often enough, but maybe this is as much as Americans can manage for the time being - after all, they also have to be ready to mobilize against ICE on a moment's notice too.
Anyway, here are a few good cartoons:

Interesting posts

And this too

“Trying to figure out what AI writing looks like is turning writer and reader into adversaries.” Colin Horgan unpacks how the AI-writing witch hunt has produced a new kind of reader: skeptical, antagonistic, and unwilling to give humans the benefit of the doubt. thewalrus.ca/readers-think-th...

The noise the audience makes right before they break into applause. It's truly an "ah" moment,. Not a deliberate "aaaw" but a reflex, a small, sudden inhalation. It's a human response to a Delightful Suprise. Like opening a perfect never-thought-of-before gift. An actual breathtaking moment. It seems we're not used to truly humble, earnest, kind, AND funny. Authenticity is in short supply, lately. Also! What a well structured piece. Now I wanna read his books.

I look forward to knowing how many Zacharias are in a Scaramucci. ... Ok, that sounded way better in my head.

And the incompetent staff work that allowed her to be hired in the first place continued as she left - the Washington Post noted a map of a controversial Washington golf course on Trump's desk in photos she posted while she was on her way out the door.

Have you heard the phrase, "he can't find his ass with both hands"?

So Maralago Fats totally misses the Beast and instead goes for a dementia stroll while thesecret service scurries around him to redirect him back to the car. He’s basically little more than a barely walking , talking Trump steak.

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

Walking the line in my auto factory and screaming at all the workers to make the cars stupider and more dangerous. They love this, it helps motivate them. "It's going to be able drive upside down," I yell through a megaphone. "It's going to be able to fart."

Dogs check back on their owners during walks because you are their safe base, a habit that goes back to wolf pack behavior and shows how strong the bond really is.

You’ve probably seen this little girl and her dog before, but most people miss the story hidden in the title... This is Compulsory Education, painted by Briton Rivière in 1887. A little girl in a white dress with a blue sash has wrapped her arms around the neck of an enormous bloodhound and opened a book in front of him. She has decided it’s time for his lesson: he has clearly not agreed to any of this, and yet there he stands, ears drooping, eyes full of patient suffering, letting her teach him to read. In 1880, a new law had made school a must for every child in England between the ages of five and ten, and the change was hotly debated. So in Rivière’s painting, a little girl who has to sit through lessons has clearly decided that her best friend should have to as well. The painting was also turned into a print for Pears soap, and that advertisement became so popular that people across Britain knew the image, even though the original painting then disappeared from public view for many years. Today it hangs in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, in Sydney, where that dog is still sitting through his lesson, like every dog who has ever put up with a child’s love and never walked away, because that’s what the best creatures on earth have always done for us... I started my newsletter because the past is full of masterpieces like this one, and so few people ever stop to give them the attention they deserve. Every week I try to. If that is something you'd like to be part of, simply subscribe! And if you'd like to support my work, a paid subscription is what makes it possible. Thanks for reading.
