47 years ago today the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior.

In this thread I'm going to discuss a few things:
- The actual story
- The Gordon Lightfoot song
- The different roles of an artist/storyteller and an educator
- Why it's ok to say we were wrong
But Gordon had artistic license, and he used it, and we got a better ballad for it.
— Ada McVean M.Sc. (@AdaMcVean) November 10, 2022
He once said that he agonized over inaccuracies in the song until his producer advised him to just tell a story.
Nonetheless, since its release, Gordon has altered 2 lyrics when he performs live.
At some point, a parishioner from the Mariners' Church of Detroit reached out to him and reported that their hall was not "musty" as he had sung. Lightfoot changed the lyric to "In a rustic old hall".
— Ada McVean M.Sc. (@AdaMcVean) November 10, 2022
And yet he made those changes.
— Ada McVean M.Sc. (@AdaMcVean) November 10, 2022
But he made them as a mark of respect. It's his song, yes, but it is a tale of real people, real places and real events.
Gordon Lightfoot never claimed to be a historian, and holding him to the standard of one is ludicrous.
I was front row at the 2010 Lightfoot concert, where he explained that he was about to change the line "At 7 p.m. a main hatchway caved in". He said he had only recently learned that what he had understood to be the facts were not accurate, and the crew was owed an honest tale.

We have a PM the right calls 'divisive' but reaction to his appearing on the much watched, highly successful show demonstrates who the divisive people really are. Looking at you, Pieerson.

Today's best Elon tweets:At a time when right-wing populists are targeting drag queens as a front in the American culture war, it’s actually a pretty big statement that a world leader is not joining that particular pile-on, and is visiting a global drag franchise like this. https://t.co/4op5YFEGyu

(watching a guy stick his hands into two wasp’s nests then climb into a molasses barrel to get away & flail around covered in bee stings drowning in molasses then rolling the barrel down a hill into the back of a cement mixer filled with dildos) well he’s clearly got a plan here

So we're measuring Twitter's lifespan in Scaramuccis at this point, right?

Biden may have to nationalize Twitter simply because this whole spectacle is becoming too embarrassing for America. Dignity loss is a category action under the Defense Production Act.

About the American mid-terms: Here's the good news -inside you are two wolves. one wants twitter to survive as a useable platform; the other wants elon musk to suffer on a hitherto unknown scale.

This isn't the end of MAGA - undoubtedly they will be back, trying again to subvert American democracy -- but it could be the beginning of the end.Correction: all of the coalition’s swing state candidates will have lost.
— The Q Origins Project (@QOrigins) November 11, 2022
Their guys in Indiana and Wyoming won.
But the swing states were the ones I was most worried about — Marchant is *absolutely* Q-pilled, Finchem is a wildly dangerous radical, and Karamo… JFC, Karamo.
Trump is going through some things.

crypto imploding, elon musk melting down as he bankrupts twitter, republicans shitting down their legs in the midterms, long knives coming out for trump…this feels like the opposite of whatever despair is. we need to come up with a word for that.

Here in Saskatchewan, two men have frozen to death this week. It is terrible:this was done with but the power of one of dark brandon's fingers. when he stretches his full hand out there will be wailing and gnashing throughout the land. https://t.co/GUQS8Gf7eA

Minstrel shows featured white people in blackface aping the dress, speech and mannerisms of black people. They are now considered racist mockery and the PM was forced to apologize profusely when photos of him in blackface were uncovered.
Drag shows feature men in womanface aping the dress, speech and mannerisms of women. While obviously sexist, such shows are "much watched" and "highly successful," and the PM is considered edgy and brave for appearing on them. Don't believe me on the sexism? How many drag kings has the show featured? Women mocking men is apparently beyond the pale.

Thanks for the comment, Cap.
Though I don't agree that blackface and drag queens are comparable -- blackface is now recognized as an insult, while drag queens are a tribute.
