So I opened my tablet today and this is what I read in the news:
Robert Fife and Laura Stone / The Globe and Mail
Doug Ford’s campaign manager warns Poilievre on track to lose federal electionThe Toronto Star is also on it:
Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s campaign manager says Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will lose the federal election unless he quickly pivots and responds to Canadians’ fear and anxiety over U.S. President Donald Trump’s economic war against Canada.
Kory Teneycke, who oversaw Mr. Ford’s three back-to-back majority government wins, bluntly told an Empire Club of Canada discussion about the election Wednesday evening that alarm bells should be ringing loudly in the Poilievre campaign.
....“You got to get on that issue,” Mr. Teneycke said. “And you know, you might not totally win, but you can’t lose by 20 points on it. You can’t get blown away on it.”
He later added: “If they don’t get on it, and get on it quick, they are going to get obliterated.”
...According to internal Progressive Conservative polling shared with The Globe by Mr. Teneycke, the federal Liberals hold a significant lead in Ontario, with 48 per cent compared to 33 per cent for the Conservatives and 11 per cent for the New Democrats...

Doug Ford’s internal polling paints grim election prospects for Pierre Poilievre in OntarioOh, we will, we will.
Ford’s campaign manager warns that unless the Tories “get on it quick, they are going to get obliterated.”
....Teneycke expressed grave concern at the direction of Poilievre’s campaign, which remains fixated on tax cuts while Carney is focused on the threat of U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods.
“For the Conservatives ... in the campaign cockpit, every buzzer and alarm is going off and the plane is like going ‘bzzzzz’ and it’s like, ‘Pull up, pull up, pull up,’” he told the 200 attendees at the event.
“You’ve got to have a pivot that’s taking some of the momentum of that issue shift and direct it towards things that are yours. It’s not going to happen if you’re talking about the World Economic Forum or the Century Initiative or God knows whatever other thing that is ... of little or no relevance to voters.”
That was a reference to Poilievre’s preoccupation linking Carney, a former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor, with “globalist” elites.
...“He looks too much like Trump. He sounds too much like Trump. He uses the lexicon of Trump,” he said, noting the CPC campaign slogan “Canada First for a Change” mirrors the president’s “America First.”
Campaigning in Coquitlam, B.C., the Tory leader would not specifically answer a question on Teneycke’s comments and played down public-opinion polls that show his party trailing Carney’s Liberals.
“We’ll wait for Canadians to make their choice on election day,” Poilievre told reporters.
In fact, we can hardly wait...
And I am reassured by this news too:
But so much for Poilievre's attempts to slime Carney's old job at Brookfield - Oopsie! Then also today, this happened - Carney's magnificent press conference:
Trump's unhinged rants in the middle of the night won't work anymore - he tried and failed to deflect American media from the SignalGate scandal by announcing the tariffs, but he only provoked Canada to come out swinging.

Today Carney demonstrated his leadership of Canada and the United States took notice - I saw dozens of posts from American media and pundits about Carney's press conference, Fox News even carried it live.
The White House actually reached out to arrange a call between Trump and Carney, so we'll see whether that happens any time soon.

Here's how the Toronto Star described Carney's speech:

Mark Carney says Canada ‘won’t back down,’ promises billions in counter-tariffs following Trump’s auto tariffsIn a great substack column, Dean Blundell describes what happened today:
“There is no silver bullet, there is no quick fix,” said the prime minister, adding Trump reached out to book a call after the U.S. president announced 25 per cent auto tariffs will take effect next week.
Canada will retaliate forcefully next week against U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25 per cent auto tariffs and other threatened penalties to come, as Prime Minister Mark Carney warned the coming trade war will be painful as the “old relationship” between the two countries is “over.”
“The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military co-operation is over. What exactly the United States does next is unclear, but what is clear is that we as Canadians have agency, we have power.”
Carney, who said he wants a “strong mandate” to take on the Trump administration, said the president reached out to him to schedule a call after Trump announced Wednesday 25 per cent auto tariffs will take effect next week.
He expects they’ll speak for the first time in the next day or two. But Carney added a comprehensive approach to abiding by, or resetting, free and fair bilateral trade rules is not on Trump’s agenda.
...Canada will “need to dramatically reduce our reliance on the United States, we will need to pivot our trade relationships elsewhere, and we will need to do things previously thought impossible at speeds we haven’t seen in generations” to become more productive, “and therefore more competitive,” he said...
He rebuffed Trump’s warning that retaliation co-ordination between Canada and Europe would be punished with more tariff escalation, saying Ottawa will calibrate its response to the 25 per cent auto tariffs and to “reciprocal” tariffs the U.S. threatens are coming next week, regardless of Trump’s threats.
“We choose our own allies in Canada,” said Carney. “We choose how we engage those allies. We are sovereign. So I take note of the president’s comment. I don’t take direction from him.”...

BREAKING: Canada officially cuts ties with Trump’s AmericaHere's a quick summary of the impact of Carney's speech:
Canada is the First Nation to Walk Away from MAGA. Proudly. Finally.
I never thought I’d write these words:
Canada just walked away from the United States. We ended our economic and security ties with Trump’s America, but it was historically stunning nonetheless.
....Today, Mark Carney made the most consequential announcement of any Canadian Prime Minister in modern history. Visibly pissed but composed, he said enough was enough:“We have to look out for ourselves. And we will do that.”It felt less like a press conference and more like Churchill with better lighting. That wasn’t a press conference. That was world history in the making. A moment that will come to define us as the world’s biggest energy superpower, and it will be done in an unimaginably short period of time because it has to be. Canada will do things not thought possible. And we’re here, so it has to get done.
“He [Trump] wants to break us so America can own us. And it will never ever happen.”
“We will defend our workers. We will defend our companies. We will defend our country.”
... We’re not victims to the whim of the fucking loser in the White House. We now have solid security agreements with several other countries that will be revealed in the days to come. Canada has forged SEVERAL key trade and economic partnerships to replace a significant portion of US business, and we’ll be announcing tariffs and non-tariff related actions (sanctions, export taxes, etc) in the coming weeks as well.
Why? We’re done fucking and we lead from the front. Being the first country in history to break off ties with America (Intelligence sharing too) requires some scroat, but that’s who we are. We’re unafraid. We know what’s important, and kissing the feet of a fascist dictator isn’t on that list.
And Carney? He continues to meet the moment. He’s the leader we’ve been yearning for for years. One that takes this GREAT nation's business, security, and sovereignty seriously.
This isn’t a threat. Carney made promises on behalf of 40 million Canadians who are shoulder to shoulder today (minus a few drunk hillbillies in Alberta and Saskatchewan.
It’s a promise.
Wow!
And while Danielle Smith is trotting down to Florida to meet with Ben Shapiro and MAGA, Jason Kenney is posting this:
So even Alberta isn't solid behind Smith anymore. And now Air Canada is getting with the tour, so to speak:
The United States has thought of itself as the world's "Main Character" for more than a century now, so the Trump administration is in for a rude awakening as the world realizes we actually can all just mostly pass them by:

Apparently bookings for Canada-to-US travel from April through September have dropped by 70%. As in, there's going to be less than a third as much. The boycott is crazy effective!
Yes I saw that news too. Our habits are changing so rapidly, the automatic "holiday down south" isn't automatic anymore.
it simply isn't safe to go to the U.S.A. we have all seen the news regarding the young Canadian woman sent to a detention centre as have others including people that have done nothing wrong except express an opinion regarding trump that ice didn't like. Its starting to look a lot like Russia, China, Turkey, Iran, etc.
I certainly couldn't go to the U.S.A. with my phone. I'd be in detention also. The world is a big place and there are lots of other places to go which are safer than the U.S.A. and its not the criminals I'm worried about. Its the American government gestapo types, ICE, etc.
