Tin soldiers and Trump is coming...

...but back in the day, Nixon was a lot scarier than Trump:

LAPD Chief McDonnell when asked if National Guard is needed: “This thing has gotten out of control.” Everything Trump touches...

There is a basic innocence here with this protest, it isn't "organized":

Skateboarding dude. Hero of the day. It has to be this kid! He stood all alone while LAPD took shots at him. Kid stood his ground and danced a bit, which pissed off the Nazis more! They tear gassed him. Finally the kid walked slowly away, turning just once to give them the finger! Respect. ✊

Its spreading too:

Hundreds of people protested outside the San Francisco ICE offices Sunday evening, and around 60 were arrested.

Its scary because, as Deep Throat described the Nixon White House during Watergate, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand:

Cannot stress enough that this is a pitiful action by a weak, scared, pathetic group of insecure, wannabe authoritarians, and they should be mocked until the end of time for wanting to bring in the military over some people protesting them at a Home Depot.

There's actually an extremely large scholarly literature about this. With some regularity, dictators order their troops to shoot protestors, the troops are like "wtf no," and then the dictator falls. I'll dig ho and dump some cites below in a second

Gavin Newsom to Trump's Border Czar Tom Homan who has threatened to have him arrested: "Come after me, arrest me. Let's just get it over with, tough guy. You know, I don't give a damn. But I care about my community. I care about this community. The hell are they doing? These guys need to grow up.”

I think Kristol has it right:

The military isn’t being employed to carry out an immigration policy. The immigration policy, and especially the way the administration is choosing to carry it out, is an excuse to call out the military.

California is bigger than most countries, including Canada. The California GDP is bigger than every country in the world except Japan, Germany and China. LA County alone accounts for 1 out of every 27 Americans. And Trump decided he could bully them with 2,000 national guard and 500 Marines?

The fact they chose California as the flash point is also an indicator that they don't think these things through LA has like 4M+ people. Sending every single ICE officer is ~20K, LAPD is 9K, LASD is 10K. Going in at 100:1 manpower – leaving zero bodies for literally anything else – is foolish 1/

With all the "Los Angeles is burning!!!" headlines, this puts it in perspective:

for context here’s a map of greater Los Angeles and the protest is the roughly the red circle

Deporting Mexicans & Mexican-Americans from cities with Spanish names in a state that was once part of Mexico feels especially wrong. The historical context deepens the injustice and evil.

Whether we know it or not, the people of Los Angeles are fighting for this entire country right now. How this plays out will very well be a precursor of what is to come for the rest of us.
