Today's News: Oilers lose, Singh apologizes, Poilievre gets his chance, Liberal bills criticized, G7 continues, Rothkopf on Trump; Xi on America

Well, the Oilers won't be bringing the Stanley Cup back to Canada this year.
They played well overall but in the end they just gave up too many goals. Tonight's game was not a joy to watch.

Sorry about the Oilers. I prefer the Leafs win the Cup but since that'll never happen again, I was kinda hoping McDavid would get one there.

Here in Saskatchewan, we have always been Canada's "next year country" But maybe the Oilers are feeling that way now too:

The Panthers beat the Oilers in the Stanley Cup for the second season in a row. But it's Edmonton, not Florida, who has the highest odds to win it all in 2026. (Odds via BetMGM)

Moving on, just a quick survey of political news:

First, this:

It’s a high bar, but this may be the dumbest moment in Canadian history globalnews.ca/news/1124371...

Next, Battle River-Crowfoot MP Damien Kurek has resigned his seat so Poilievre will be getting the by-election he needs to return to the Commons - the only job he has ever had - so he can face a leadership review in January.
And Canadians are licking their chops:

It would be supremely ironic if Poilievre wins his very rural Alberta seat in the by-election, but then loses the leadership review, making him a mere MP having to do the constituency work he hates in rural Alberta for the next 4 years. #cdnpoli www.thestar.com/news/canada/...

Things aren't going quite as smoothly for Carney and the Liberals in Parliament just now. I know its easy to get these bills mixed up so here's a useful primer:

Since May 26, the 45th Parliament has introduced 12 bills in the House of Commons — 5 from the government and 7 from MPs across different parties. We'll keep working hard as they move through the process. ๐Ÿ”—More info here: bit.ly/3SNJ0y0

Both the Strong Borders bill (C-2) and the One Canadian Economy bill (C-5) have some issues, and I hope they will get fixed soon.

As time grows short to debate the Liberal government's contentious Bill C-5, First Nations leaders tell AFN they have "substantive concerns." www.aptnnews.ca?p=272470

Strong Borders without a Strong Democracy is pointless. Civil Liberties must be respected, especially when those south of us do not. Change bill C-2 to delete warrantless data fishing. #cdnpoli

Meanwhile, back at the G7 (now known as the 6+1):

Carney put Zelensky in Trump’s G7 Seat after Trump bailed. Power. Move.

A good summary here by David Rothkopf

Trump is Stumbling Toward Disaster
In Iran...but not just in Iran
...Trump said he left the G7 meeting because he had to attend to important Iran-Israel business. Nonsense. He could’ve handle that from Canada. He left because he was isolated and alone at the summit, a source of ridicule and derision from his peers. Especially after he made his sniveling pitch for Putin to join the group even as Putin was attacking more civilians in Ukraine brutally. But doing Putin’s errands was the job he was assigned and when it was done he headed home in a snit. He does not like our allies. They do not like him. It makes him one of the weakest leaders in our history
... It didn’t help matters that Trump’s triumphal birthday parade was a bust. He is having a bad week. Actually, he’s having a bad presidency. No deal in Ukraine. No deal in Gaza. No deal with Iran. No 90 deals in 90 days. His one signature piece of legislation perhaps the most unpopular big such piece in memory (according to the polls…and for good reason). Stephen Miller’s immigration crackdown is hugely unpopular too. Trump’s flip flops on trade on Iran policy or, more recently, on whether ICE would go after agriculture and hospitality industries make him look weak. So too does the fact that his wife obviously hates him. Elon has dumped him. He’s a greedy crook and its apparent for the all the world to see. He’s getting old. His cabinet is full of true dimwits from Hegseth to RFK, Jr. and being president doesn’t seem fun anymore. At least that’s my sense from people I know with up close perspective on the president and the White House. He’s unhappy. He wishes he were playing golf.
While Trump is posting craziness, Chinese president Xi posts this:

The leadership of China, Xi Jinping in specific but it seems like the top dogs in general, characteristically seem to have something that few Western leaders (maybe Carney) have: They're smart and competent. Whatever you might say about the Communist Party of China, they headhunt talent aggressively.

Good point, PLG. I had never thought of it that way before.
