Turning to the latest from Ukraine, first I want to share a tweet I sent out today, related to my blog post from a few days ago:I remember when “free speech” was a progressive, forward-thinking movement that overcame puritan restrictions on things like profanity and nudity.

Now it’s been co-opted by the right to mean “the right to say any horrible shit we want, anywhere, without consequences.”
The nuclear question is the riderless horse in this metaphor -- we just don't know what will happen. Today, I read more news of possible nuclear threats, and more discussions about whether to take this seriously or not:History is "galloping riderless across the landscape" & we can't predict how this might end. pic.twitter.com/xAY5BCH9UF

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN Friday that "all of the countries of the world" should be prepared for the possibility that Russian President Vladimir Putin could use tactical nuclear weapons in his war on Ukraine https://t.co/e1YrR7HDHH

Few things are more tiresome than Westerners getting scared of Russian nukes. As @GeneralClark repeatedly states. Rather than getting scared of Russian nukes, presume that Putin will use nukes & ask what the US will do. The answer is Putin will not use nukes then.

Updating on the situation in Mariupol, tonight I found some stories that after more than 50 days, this brave city still fights on. There are some details here in today's Daily Kos article of the Ukraine soldiers who are still resisting. Here is a related tweet:As speculation about the Russian nuclear threat grows, note reporting below: The US has been monitoring Russian military forces for any unusual movement of nuclear weapons and has not detected such movements to date. https://t.co/ZGYaLyQRGw

Russia is bombing this once-beautiful city of 440,000 people out of existence:DNR advisor Yan Gagin says that the assault on Mariupol is progressing so slowly because AzovStal plant, one of the last remaining defensive Ukr positions, is the size of a city with underground tunnels and buildings that can withstand bombings and “even nuclear strike” pic.twitter.com/U0xYIOiSex

Russia appears to be on the verge of capturing the devastated port city of Mariupol, which a regional leader said had been “wiped off the face of the earth.” Zelensky said in his nightly address Friday that the besieged city was the focus of meetings with senior defense aides. He declined to elaborate but pledged to do “everything to save our people.”

Head of the Severodonetsk Civil Military Administration Oleksandr Striuk said on April 15 that Severodonetsk is under heavy fire by Russian forces and that only around 20,000 residents of the total 135,000 remain in the city.
