#PopeFrancis arrived in Edmonton on Sunday to an honour drum song ahead of what he describes as a "penitential" trip aimed at advancing reconciliation with Indigenous people over the lasting harm suffered in residential schools.#PapalVisit2022 pic.twitter.com/YWRJ7YUPX8

The Pope has arrived in Edmonton, Canada, planning to apologize for the Catholic Church’s participation for more than a century in a Canadian government campaign suppressing the language and culture of indigenous peoples. @marcusmoore reports from Canada. https://t.co/dD3a6MLPSV pic.twitter.com/4jqQrlwJX1

Reporting from Ermineskin Cree Nation for international media. I say it like it is & will not sugar coat the atrocities the Catholic Church perpetuated against Indigenous children. Yes, I called it “the evils of the Catholic Church” on world media. This is reckoning. pic.twitter.com/UffoW6vpWZ

The world is watching. So let it be known that genocide was committed against babies & children here in Canada by the state & churches, the majority player being the Catholic Church. Truth needs to be known far & wide. That’s why @Pontifex is here- for penance. Reckon & heal.

The government has set up a webpage about this papal visit including resources for support for Indigenous communities, because this will be an emotionally difficult time of pain and generational trauma:“Some 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their families and forced to attend in an effort to isolate them from the influence of their homes, Native languages and cultures and assimilate them into Canada’s Christian society.” https://t.co/K6vhCqqIHc

I have seen several comments like this too:Gilakas'la ❤️ your support is really appreciated ❤️❤️ it's difficult to know how his visit will impact survivors, so thank you for your support ❤️

The Pope coming to Canada is very triggering to me as an Indigenous person. I refuse to forgive the abuse and genocide the Church committed. I will never forgive the Church. Never.

People are furious about this:I’m thinking of those who didn’t survive.

Over 10,000 unmarked graves of CHILDREN have been found so far buried near the grounds of residential schools. 10,000 and counting.
How do you apologize for genocide? #PopeInCanada #IndigenousPeoples #residentialschools #papalvisit

A very useful comment:Maskwacis to ‘Freedom Convoy’ protesters during Pope visit: ‘Your agendas do not have a place’ | https://t.co/94ng9bPvCx. I will be extremely angry if the truckers protest the pope’s visit. The indigenous community has been waiting generations for this! https://t.co/Gc5L3881o5

Pope Francis used the opportunity provided by the April visit to Rome by a Canadian delegation to offer a statement of apology for the residential schools. The next step for implementation of UNDRIP (United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) is to overturn the Doctrine of Discovery:The newly paved road to Maskwacis - road was full of potholes, in bad need of repair and in record time was paved for the Papal visit. Some community members joked - but not really - that it would be dug up when the Pope left. #papalvisit pic.twitter.com/7SIHqdV0Ol

I am hopeful now that Pope Francis might use this trip to go further toward reconciliation by revoking the Doctrine of Discovery:The meetings in Rome this week between Indigenous leaders and the Vatican are historic. The Doctrine of Discovery, Residential Schools reflect a colonial past whose terrible impact must be understood as we seek to overcome it. #UNDRIP

As Pope Francis prepares for his arrival in Canada on Sunday, he faces mounting pressure from the Assembly of First Nations and others to revoke the Doctrine of Discovery. https://t.co/Esf7OSmpNZ

Dante's Inferno describes the popes being tortured in hell for eternity. Dante may have been onto something.

Well, I think this Pope is trying - much more than any predecessors did. I am hopeful he will overturn the Discovery doctrine while he is here.
